Alice Wiff passes away Dec. 3

Alice E. (Klein) Wiff, 83, of Martell, WI, died at the Baldwin Community Memorial Hospital on Sunday, Dec. 3, 1989. She had been a resident of the Baldwin Care Center for the past three years.

Alice was born March 16, 1906 near Garrison, Iowa, the daughter of William and Anna (Reiss) Klein. As a small child, her family moved from Garrison to Bellevue, Iowa where they lived until the spring of1915 when they moved to a farm near Ellsworth, WI. She graduated from the Ellsworth High School and taught rural school at the Kay School in Martell Township for several years.

On May 26, 1926, she was married to Guy W. Wiff at the home of his sister Helen in New London, WI. The couple made their home on the Wiff family farm for the next 50 years.

Alice was active in the United Methodist Women's Society at the New Centerville Methodist Church where she was also the pianist for nearly 40 years. She was also a member of the Homemaker's Club in the Martell area for many years. She enjoyed many handicraft hobbies like crewel work and making braided rugs as well as piecing quilts and making Raggedy Ann dolls. She also had many flower beds. Her projects took prizes at the Pierce County Fair many times. She and Guy traveled extensively throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and the South Pacific.

Three children were born to this family: David, John and Patricia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Anna Klein, four brothers: Walter, Fred, Marion and Oliver, and one infant sister, as well as her husband, Guy who died January 1976 and one son David, who died December 1971.

Survivors include her son John and his wife Lavona of Elgin, IL and her daughter Pat of Martell as well as five grandchildren and their spouses; Margaret and Hugh Whipple of St. Charles, IL, Robert and Lana Wiff of Seattle, WA, Joan and Bill Montgomery of Highland Park, IL, and Suzanne Wiff of Bellingham, WA. There are four great-grandchildren: Amanda, Samantha, and Alexander Wiff, children of John and Carla Wiff, and Kelsey Wiff, daughter of Robert and Lana Wiff, as well as four step-great-grandchildren: Erica and Mark Montgomery, children of Joan and Bill Montgomery and Markene Robinson and Tyler Stratton, children of Robert and Lana Wiff. Other survivors include one brother Sherman Klein of Ellsworth and 3 sisters: Elizabeth Canfield of Ellsworth, Luella Schwalen of Salem, Oregon and Mildred Gilbertson of River Falls. There are numerous nieces and nephews and many cousins and other relatives.

Visitation was held Friday at the Keehr Funeral Home, Spring Valley and funeral services were held at the New Centerville Methodist Church on Saturday, Dec. 9, 1989 at 1:30 p.m. with interment at the Martell Methodist Cemetery. Pastor Janet Ellinger officiated with music provided by Shirley Schutt and Bette Jean Wiff.

Bearers were: Charles Wiff, Thomas Wiff, Timothy Wiff, John N. Wiff, Robert A. Wiff and Roger Wiff.
