He was assigned to the 376th Bomb Group 512th Bomb Squadron while serving in Africa. 1st Lt McAtee was one of the pilots who flew in Operation Tidal Wave 1 Aug 1943. It was the first low level bombing of the Ploesti oil fields in Romania.

Cause:

Lt. John McAtee with crew of DOODLEBUG flew in the Ploesti raid "Operation Tidal Wave" August 1st 1943. One of the most daring raids of WW2. Coming in at tree top level the 376th BG destroy Romanian oil refineries. McAtee was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross for his valor on this mission.
