William's father was thrown from a horse and killed a few months before his birth and he was raised by a stepfather and his Haden uncles. He first married Mary Martha Ann Gains, 13 Jun 1837, in Warren County, KY, and they had two daughters. Before December of 1845, the family had moved to Greene County, Missouri and Mary Martha had died, because on 16 Dec 1845, William married Mary Jane Perkins in Greene County. Her family had also come from Kentucky to Missouri. The family lived near Wilson's Creek and soon after the Civil War battle fought there, the Yankees burned their home. According to a letter written by son Joseph, William was in a Yankee prison, accused of spying, at that time. Mary Jane took her children to Grayson Co, Texas. Evenutally the family was reunited and settled in Ladonia.
