Gary P. "Smitty" Smith

COAL TOWNSHIP — Gary Philip "Smitty" Smith, 69, of 1424 Pulaski Ave., died Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at his residence.

Born in Waynesboro Feb. 10, 1941, he was a son of the late George and Erma (Bashore) Smith. He was a lifelong resident of Shamokin.

He was a 1959 graduate of Shamokin High School.

He retired in June 2003 from the State Correctional Prison in Frackville, where he was a food service supervisor. He also, at one time, owned and operated Big Daddy's Restaurant in Shamokin for 20 years. His most recent place of employment was the Brady Fire Company.

On Feb. 22, 1969, in Shamokin, he married the former Delores Leashefski, who preceded him in death in 1999.

He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, serving from October 1966 to October 1968, attaining the rank of sergeant.

He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and was also an avid pool player, shooting on various pool teams in the Shamokin Pool League. Hobbies included telling good jokes, doing crossword puzzles, spending time at the casinos and listening to "oldies but goodies" music and bands.

He was a member of Mother Cabrini Church in Shamokin, the Maine, East End, West End, Independence and Brady fire companies and the Fairview Gun Club.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Yvonne and Gary Timco, of Coal Township, and a son and daughter-in-law, Phillip and Angela Smith, of Coal Township; a step-daughter and son-in-law, Karen and David Wollerton, of Harrisburg; four grandchildren, Zachary and Garrett Timco and Hannah and Cameron Smith, all of Coal Township; a step-grandson, Ian Wollerton, of Harrisburg; two brothers, William, of Urban, and Joseph, of Lancaster; a sister, Ruthann Acuri, of Freeland; several cousins, nieces and nephews, and a companion, Bernice Gricoskie.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, George Smith, in 2002.

SMITH — Gary Philip "Smitty" Smith, 69, of 1424 Pulaski Ave., Coal Township. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Mother Cabrini Church, Shamokin. Burial will be at All Saints Cemetery, Elysburg. Viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with a Christian Vigil service at 7 p.m., and from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. Thursday at Leonard J. Lucas Funeral Home Ltd., 120 S. Market St., Shamokin.
