LAYTON – Betty Jean Cheney, 82, passed away Thursday, January 8, 2009 at her home. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be dearly missed.

She was born September 19, 1926 in Kemmerer, Wyoming the daughter of Jesse Elias and Claudena Hannah Barnum Sawaya. She attended school in Kemmerer and Evanston, Wyoming.

Betty married Marr Weir Cheney on February 21, 1946 in Clearfield. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on February 20, 1963.

She was a faithful member of the LDS Church who held various callings throughout her lifetime.

Betty was an excellent cook and enjoyed sewing as well. She liked to spend time working in her garden and with her family.

Surviving are her two sons, Steven (Deborah) Cheney, Evanston, WY; Scott (Pam) Cheney, Layton; daughter, Darla (Joe) Walker, West Point; 15 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, three sisters, Joyce (Robert) Schofield, Syracuse; Colleen (Vince) Wolski, Clearfield; and Caren (Ernest) Ciampini, Ogden.

Preceded in death by her husband, daughter, Marsha Jordan and sister, Juanita Stephenson.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Friends and family may call Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary.

Interment, Clearfield City Cemetery.
