NORTHBRIDGE, MA -- Retired Army Capt. Henry J. Guertin Sr., 82, of Quaker Street, formerly of Wareham, died at home Thursday, April 27, 2000.

He was the widower of Rita (Gagne) Guertin, who died Nov. 15, 1998.

Mr. Guertin was born in Leominster on Dec. 5, 1917. He was the son of the late Francis X. and Annie (Cormier) Guertin.

Raised in Leominster, he enlisted in the Army in 1943 and served during World War II, where he participated in four major battle campaigns in Europe with the 3rd Army under Gen. George Patton from 1943 to 1947. He was also a Korean War Army veteran who participated in five major battle campaigns in Korea with the 24th Infantry Division from 1949 to 1951.

Mr. Guertin received two Presidential Unit Citations and the Bronze Star, as well as a battlefield commission in a wartime situation in Korea from 1st sergeant to 2nd lieutenant. He was a platoon leader in Korea.

He was also awarded medals for good conduct, the American Theater of Operation, National Defense, European ETO Service with four battle stars, Victory, Army Occupation of Germany and Japan, U.N. Korean, and a Korean service ribbon with five stars. He was also an expert with the carbine and rifle.

While he was in Korea and the Far East, his wife raised their family in Japan. After 1951, the Guertin family was stationed in the United States, where Capt. Guertin later became a company commander at Fort Huachuca in Arizona.
He retired from active duty in 1960 and became the owner and proprietor of the Victory Tavern in Waynesville, Mo., for four years and later lived in Leominster for more than 26 years.

He subsequently lived in Wareham for 16 years before moving to Northbridge in 1997.

Mr. Guertin was a life member of the Uxbridge Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1385; a life member of the Wareham Disabled Veterans Chapter 12; a member of the American Legion Post in Wareham; and a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Bourne. He was also a member of the National Order of Battlefield Commissions.

Survivors include a son, Henry J. Guertin Jr. of Worcester; six daughters, Coralie A. "Coco" Lajoie of Northbridge, Cynthia B. Porter of Caruthersville, Mo., Ruthann Mitchell of Ada, Mich., Susan M. Dagg of Englewood, Fla., Sherri L. Hendricks of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Michelle L. Roy of Northbridge; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

A military graveside funeral service will be at noon Thursday at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Providence Road, Northbridge; arrangements are by the Buma Funeral Home, 480 Church St., Whitinsville.
