Grover M. Pell, 77, 725 Walnut St., died at 12:20 a.m. today in St. Anthony Hospital in Terre Haute. He had been hospitalized beginning in July for a period of six weeks, had returned home for a few days and then was re-admitted two weeks ago.
A retired railroad engineer, he had been employed with the Pennsylvania (Penn-Central) Railroad for 40 years, upon his retirement in 1957.
Mr. Pell was a member of a Clay County family whose roots are deeply implanted in the county's history. He was born in the original McKinley home southeast of Harmony on Aug. 30, 1892, a son of George G. and Catherine (West) Pell.
His grandmother Pell was a McKinley whose family later built the stately homestead east of Harmony along the Old National Road (U.S. 40) and which remains today as one of county's historical landmarks.
The deceased was a veteran of World War I and served in France with the Army's Ammunition Train. Shortly after his return home, he was united in marriage on Oct. 30, 1919 in Shelbyville, Ill., to the former Juanita Thomas who survives.
Mr. Pell was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a 50 year member of the Brazil Centennial Lodge No. 541, F&A.M., Bussing-Louderback Post No. 1127, V.F.W., the Brazil Kiwanis Club and the Brotherhood of Railroad Engineers. He was currently serving as a member of the Brazil Board of Zoning Appeals and was the first chairman of the board.
Surviving besides his wife, Juanita, are a son, Jack E. Pell, Long Beach, Calif,; three grand-children, Mrs. Carol Ann Hooper, Huntington Beach, Calif,; Steven T. Pell, Long Beach; and Michael H. Pell in the Air Force at Cheyenne, Wyo.; and a great grandaughter, Kelly Ann Pell, Long Beach.
Other survivors are two brothers, Jacob A. Pell, R.R.3, Brazil and George R. Pell, Brazil; two sisters, Mrs. Harvey (Frances Nickels, Terre Haute; and Mrs. Katherine Longshore, Quitman, Ga. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Services will be conducted in Miller and Sons Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Saturday. Rev. Lester L. Knopfmeier will officiate and burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park north of Terre Haute.
Friends may begin calling after 4 p.m. Friday at the funeral home where the Centennial Lodge will hold Masonic memorial rites at 8 p.m. Friday.
