OBITUARY:
Joan Elizabeth DeLong Snouffer, age 98, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 9 in Port Saint Lucie, Florida.

Jo, as she preferred to be called, was preceded in death by her husband Robert, her sister Eleanor Wiedie, and her son Lawrence. She is survived by her brother George DeLong of Arnold MD, three children, Ann (Larry) Cordell of Galloway, OH, Rebecca (Becky) Cubbin of Hollywood, FL, and Michael (Christine) of Long Grove, IL; eight grandchildren: Ann's daughters Joni Baker, Brooke Rockhold, Chelsea Smith and Kari Mahuren; Becky's son Toby Cubbin; and Mike's daughters Katrina Deutsch and Karissa Snouffer and son Matthew Snouffer. In addition, she is survived by 9 great grandchildren and several grandnieces and nephews.

Born to Dwight and Fanny DeLong, in Columbus, Ohio on July 10, 1923, she was a long-time resident of Worthington, Ohio until moving to Florida in 1980 where she lived the rest of her life. She was a graduate of Upper Arlington High School, where she met Robert L Snouffer (deceased in 1976), the love of her life. A 1945 graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, she earned a master's degree in music, specializing in organ. She performed an organ recital at OWU as part of her graduation ceremony. After her graduation, she continued a life filled with music: playing the organ for worship services and acting as music and choir director at several churches in the central Ohio area. She led children's choirs, junior choirs, adult choirs and, her first love, bell choirs. In addition, she taught piano lessons, accompanied dance classes for Barbara Garrett's dance studio, and played for weddings and funerals. She even had the privilege of being the organist for Jack Nicklaus' wedding. For many years she was organist, choir director, and assistant music director at North Broadway Methodist Church in Columbus and later led choirs and played organ at Marysville Methodist and Linworth Methodist. After moving to Florida, she was the organist at Stuart Methodist and, most recently, at Port St Lucie Methodist. She formed and directed bell choirs at all of these churches. Her bell choir at Port St Lucie, which she led until the age of 90, thrived. She took them to performances, seminars, and workshops as far away as Lakeland, FL. On weeks when the bell choir played for the church service, she would get to church early to set up all the tables and arrange the bells, some of which were very heavy. She spent many evenings "marking" the music for her members. When she had to "retire" she continued to keep track of the choir's progress and performances. She would never miss a service when they were playing. Even after she could no longer drive, her beloved friend Kim, who was still in the bell choir, would act as her chauffer making sure she didn't miss their performance. She lived and breathed for the bells. Even a few days before her passing, she woke up from a deep sleep telling her visiting daughter and granddaughter about a dream she'd just had concerning her beloved bell choir.

Some of Jo's most beloved times in life were the summers her family spent at Put-in-Bay, Ohio on South Bass Island in Lake Erie. As a high school teacher, her husband, Robert, had the opportunity to stay with the children full time at their island home, while on weekends, Jo would "commute" back to Columbus to fulfill her duties as a church organist. It was her devotion to her job that helped make life on the island financially possible. Days there were filled with playing games, climbing rocks, and turning beach boulders into "pirate caves". There were boat rides, fishing trips, sailing, and swimming on the rocky beach. The family would sometimes watch squalls and storms as they sped darkly across the lake. They were fascinating to witness, with sheeting rain and wind approaching slowly from the horizon toward the shore. Jo would always make sure everyone got inside safely before the rains swept in from the lake. A simple and fun-filled life was led there with no TV or even a telephone. Joan and Robert provided their children the richest and fullest of days. What a beautiful legacy to pass down to future generations.

Jo will be laid to rest on South Bass Island at Put-in-Bay, beside Robert.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Jo's name to the Port Saint Lucie Methodist Church, Handbell Choir, 260 Prima Vista Blvd, Port St Lucie, FL 34983
