Published in the Piscataquis (ME) Observer 15 Nov 1877 p2: "The Whig says that Mr. Ruel Gowen of Bradford, met with a very severe accident last Monday. He and his son were at work in the woods with their axes, when Mr. Gowen's ax glanced from a limb, cutting a fearful gash in his leg and injuring the bone."
