Marvin “Marv” Clifford Melum was born April 26, 1925 on the family farm near Canby, Oregon. “Wild Marvin” grew up and worked on the farm and attended Canby High School.  During World War II Marv served in the US Coast Guard.  In 1943 Marv met his future wife Luella, “Lolly” or “Lol” Miller.  They were married and he went to work for the local telephone company in Canby.
In 1950 Marv purchased the Deschutes Telephone Company and the family moved to Maupin.  During his time in Maupin, Marv modernized the phone service, converted to a dial system and expanded to Wamic and Tygh Valley. He also sang in the church choir and served in Lions Club and on the school board.  The family enjoyed their 16 busy years in Maupin.  In 1966, Marv sold the phone company and the family moved to The Dalles, where he co-owned the Valley Vista Nursing Home and later purchased and developed land along the Columbia River in Rowena. Marv and Lol were married for 50 years before her untimely death in 1993.
Marv loved his family, friends, the outdoors, hunting, fishing, boating, searching for Native American artifacts, singing, and telling funny stories.  Marv died January 26, 2015 with family at his bedside.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Olga; wife Lol; brother, Richard; and sisters, Eileen and Carole.  Marv is survived by his son Tom (Sheri) of The Dalles; daughter Patricia (Rich) of Portland; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Marv was an old-fashioned, rugged individualist who was fiercely independent and a man of faith who loved his family and could, at times, be very funny. Marv will long be remembered and dearly missed by his loving family and friends.
A graveside service is planned for 1 pm on February 21, 2015 at the Zoar Lutheran Cemetery in Canby. A reception will follow at the Zoar Lutheran Church. The family wishes that any memorial contributions be made to Southern Wasco County (SWC) Ambulance, PO Box 125, Maupin, Oregon 97037.
