Charles became deaf at 18 months as a result of measles. However, he was an intelligent boy who did not allow his handicap to hold him back. He attended schools in Hartford and Fernwood (?) and became a government clerk in the U.S. Treasury Dept. His first wife, Frances 'Fanny' Freeman, was also deaf as a result of an illness in childhood. Together they raised two hearing sons, Edgar F., born 26 May 1869, and George Williams, b. 14 Feb 1873. After Fanny's death in 1885, Charles remarried to another deaf woman, Caroline Hotchkin, in 1888. She too had lost her hearing as a child to illness. (Thanks to contributor HWA)
