Edwin C. Anthony Jr, 77, 800 Randolph St., Hanover, died Thursday, Dec. 10, at his home.
Born Nov. 7 1921 in Hanover, he was the son of the late Edwin C. Anthony Sr. and Helen P. (Bowman) Anthony Brendle. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary (Wildasin) Anthony.
Mr. Anthony had been a carpenter for I.H. Crouse and Sons, C.W. Test the former Suburban Builders and Westinghouse in Gettysburg.
He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church; Allied Veterans Council of Hanover Honor Guard; Pearl Harbor Survivors Second Marine Division; Mid-Atlantic Chapter Second Marine Division Marine Corps League; VFW; Hanover American Legion Post 14; Military Order of Devil Dogs; Goodwill Fire Company; Loyal Order of Moose Hanover Chapter 227; and the National AARP.
In 1937, at age 17, Mr. Anthony enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed in Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He spent 4 1/2 years in the South Pacific as a platoon sargeant with the Second Marine Division and saw active duty as a defender of Midway Island, the battle for Guadalcanal, Guam and was on the island of Rota when the Japanese surrendered.
For his service during World War II, he was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation with Broze Star, Navy Unit Commendation, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon with four Bronze Stars, American Campaign Ribbon with Bronze Star and American Defense Ribbon with Bronze Star.
Upon his return to the United States in 1945, he enlisted in the Army Reserves and was again called to serve as an Army platoon sargeant during the Korean War for which he was awarded the Korean Defense Medal.
He attended Eichelberger High School.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Ethel L. Anthony of Hanover; one brother, James M. Anthony of Littlestown; and one sister, Leona B. Anthony of Williamstown, N.J.
He was predeceased by son, Patrick Brian Anthony; brother, John W. Anthony; and two sisters Mary Grace Zimmerman and Evelyn A. Emig.
