He was born at Penny, May 3, 1943, a son of the late Nelson and Victoria Bartley Akers.
He was a retired coal miner formerly employed by Scotts Branch Mining Co., and a member of Jefferson City Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Marie Little.
He is survived by his wife, Emma Lee Younce Akers; one son, Phil Darren Akers of Virgie; one daughter, Janet Davis of Winchester; three stepdaughters, Vanda Mullins of Robinson Creek, Karen Rose of Lexington, Leigh Hensley of Rutledge; one brother, Minus Akers of LaFayette, Tenn.; two sisters, Clearcie Elswick and Vesta Elswick, both of Virgie; and nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, in the Shelby Valley Church of Christ with Greg Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Ray Cemetery, Little Robinson Creek.
