Merlin Francis Berg was born on 28 Apr 1917 in Hodges Township, Stevens County, Minnesota, to Axel and Jessie (Reese) Berg. He had two older sisters, Florence and Vi.

He was educated in various schools in Pope County, MN and graduated from Villard High School in 1937.

He joined the Army in Feb 1941 at Fort Snelling, MN. While stationed at Fort Lewis, WA he met Doris Chandler. After he was transferred to Camp Rucker, AL, she followed him and they were married 15 Aug 1942 in Dothan, AL. The Army also took him to Tennessee, California, and the Pacific Theater until he was discharged in Dec 1945.

Following his discharge from the military, Bud and Doris lived in several locations in Washington state, including Orondo, East Wenatchee, and Twisp with their two sons Merlin and Martin. During this time Bud owned his own house painting business.

In the early 1950s, they moved to Minnesota where Bud worked for the State of Minnesota as a grain weigher. The lived in several locations including Bloomington and Mankato. After they moved to Mankato, a daughter, Cheri, joined the family. Bud then became a gasoline inspector for the State of Minnesota and they moved several more times including Bloomington, Hayward, Albert Lea, Minneapolis, and Coon Rapids.

Bud died at the age of 82 on 28 Dec 1999 in Albert Lea, MN. His funeral was conducted on 31 Dec at the Bayview-Freeborn Funeral Home with Pastor Glen Stevens from the Crossroads Evangelical Free Church officiating. He was buried that same day in the Bethany Lutheran Cemetery in Blue Mounds Township, Pope County, MN near his parents, grandparents, and extended family.
