He was next to the youngest of nine children born to Joseph Townsend Waid & Mary Eliza Pooler Waid.

Ben Waid was born in Waushara County in the town of Spring Water on June 24, 1882. He was the next to the youngest of nine children of Joseph Townsend Waid and Mary Eliza (Pooler) Waid. Ben moved to Waupaca County sometime around 1900 and (we assume) stayed with his older sister, Livonia (Waid) Baker, and her husband, Otis. The Bakers had a farm on the site of the current Neuman residence.

While working in the Parfreyville area, Ben met Ethel Olive Gotham. Ethel was the daughter of John Oscar Gotham and Romelia Jane (Court) Gotham. Ben and Ethel were married November 20, 1907.
