The son of Christian & Rebecca (Grove) Flack, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He never married.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Franklin County July 25, 1863, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 1 as a private with Co. I in the six-month organization of the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pennsylvania), and honorably discharged with his company February 22, 1864.

A world traveler during his post-war years, his many trips across the globe are chronicled in Franklin County newspapers. He died at his brother Charles' home from "complete chronic obstruction of bowels."
