Mary Jane Mast
The Herald regrets to chronicle the death of Mary Jane Mast of Dana, mother of the Aikman family. She was a grand, good woman and mother of one of the most prominent and highly respected families in Vermillion county. The Dana News publishes the following obituary:

"Mary Jane Mast was born Nov. 18, 1824 and died at 10:15 a.m., May 24, 1904, being 79 years, 6 months and 6 days old. She lived at the time of her death with her eldest son Peter Aikman in Dana, Ind., where she has resided for many years since leaving the old farm near Bono where the children were all born. She was the daughter of Peter and Margaret Aikman (Amerman) and was born in Davis county, Ind., her parents moving to this county when she was a child. Her first husband was Barton S. Aikman to whom she married in 1846, and by whom she had nine children, one a daughter who died in infancy and eight sons all grown to manhood, all of whom survive her. Her first husband died in 1861.

"In 1869 she was married to Jno. Mast who died in 1894 leaving her a widow the second time.

"She leaves surviving her eight sons: Peter Aikman of Dana, Rev. Thomas Aikman of Nebraska, Hugh Aikman of Montezuma, Franklin Aikman of Crawfordsville, Dr. E.A. Aikman of Clinton, Rev S.S. Aikman of Ohio, A.M. Aikman of Toronto, and B.S. Aikman of Newport. She also leaves two step-sons, Silas Aikman and Dr. Robert Aikman, and one step daughter, Maria James. She also leaves three brothers, Theophilis Amerman, Richard Amerman and Wm. Amerman, and four sisters,
Eliza Ralston, Martha Ford, Fanny Anderson and Margaret Jones, and a large number of grandchildren and great grandchildren."

The funeral was held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Bono church, Rev. J.W. Nye officiating. Interment in the Bono Cemetery.
