Gary was trained as a machine gunner in the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) 0331. He carried an M-60 machine gun and was featured in Leatherneck Magazine caring that gun looking out a window in Hue City. He fought in the battle of Hue City during the Tet Offensive in 1968. He was with Hotel Co, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines (the most decorated battalion in the history of the Marine Corp.)

On July 31, 1968 Gary and his squad were walking through the jungle on patrol 7 KM E-SE of Liberty Bridge in Quang Nam in Vietnam. The VietCong had planted a wooden box mine in some tank tracks knowing that the Marines would believe this is a safe place to walk. Gary stepped on the track and the mine detonated, killing him instantly.

Gary was very outgoing and personable. He introduced himself to everyone each time saying: "My name is Gary Keller and I'm from Yakima". He was intelligent and strong-willed. He was planning to go to medical school after the service and become a doctor. Unfortunately, he was not able to do that. He was only 19 years old.
