Florence Ada Gatchell (née Kelley) was born 13 May 1857 in Patterson, Hardin County, Ohio to carpenter/cooper/farmer William David Kelley and Sarah Catherine (née Van Orsdall), married laborer (and later grocer) Phillip Moore Gatchell 15 Oct 1878 in Wyandot County, Ohio, had 9 children with him, moved with her family to Center Township, Smith County, Kansas circa 1884--to White Salmon, Klickitat County, Washington circa 1891--and to Fruitvale, Yakima County, Washington circa 1899, widowed in 1913, died after being hit by a car 30 Nov 1942 in Yakima, Yakima County, Washington at the age of 85, and was buried in Tahoma Cemetery in Yakima. She was a schoolteacher and a grocer, and an activist with the Socialist Party of America.

In 1907, when she was a 50-year-old grandmother, she was arrested during a political protest in Seattle, King County, Washington. She traveled 142 miles (229 km) from Yakima to Seattle by train knowing she would be arrested for her planned action. She spent a night in jail.
