Frederick Ivan Albrecht, born June 11, 1917, passed away peacefully in his sleep Sunday, March 23, 2008, at his home.

Fred was born and raised in Akron, served in the U.S. Army in World War II and had fifty years of service with The Fred W. Albrecht Grocery Company (Acme Fresh Markets).

Fred graduated from Western Reserve Academy, Colgate University, and The University of Akron Law School, passing the Ohio Bar in 1951. He was President of The Fred W. Albrecht Grocery Co., President of Albrecht, Incorporated, on the Board of Directors of Bank One, Ruhlin Construction Company, and Akron Savings and Loan. He served his community in many volunteer capacities including Akron Area Community Improvement Corp., Little Hoover Commission, Chairman of Akron Sesquicentennial, Board of Children's Hospital, University of Akron when it was a municipal school, United Way Chairman, Vice Chairman of Akron Small Business Development Corp., President of The University of Akron Foundation, President of Hilltoppers Club and Weathervane Theatre. He was the recipient of University of Akron Alumni Honor Award, Distinguished Executive of Year Award, Industry Service Award from Ohio Grocers Association, and the Bert A. Polsky Humanitarian Award with his wife Francia.

Fred leaves as a legacy a thriving grocery chain of 15 Acme Fresh Markets that prides itself on "Feeding the Families of Our Community for over 100 Years." Always positive, always thinking, and deeply loyal to his co-workers, Fred was committed to building a business where associates would always be proud to say: "I work at Acme." Fred was proud of Acme's sponsorship of the Acme-Zip football game that benefited the University of Akron's athletic program for 37 years.

Fred is survived by his loving wife, Francia, to whom he was married for 66 years; their six children: Heather, Ivan, Gwyneth (Sam) Stites of Colorado, Steve (Sophie), Tatiana (Richard) Harris, and Monica (Douglas) Kridler of Columbus; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 31, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1361 West Market St., Akron 44313, with Rev. Mark J. Pruitt officiating. Private entombment will be at Rose Hill Burial Park. Friends may call 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 30, at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., Akron 44333. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the F. W. Albrecht Family Foundation, a foundation established by Fred and his co-workers to benefit charitable organizations in the community and provide scholarships to Acme Fresh Market employees (P.O. Box 1910, Akron, Ohio 44305).
