United States World War II Marine Corps General. General Randolph Pate was the 21st Commandant of the Marine Corps from 1956 to 1959. He started his military career enlisting in the Army in 1898. Shortly afterwards he was accepted to the Virginia Military Institute where he Graduated in 1918 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant In the United Marine Corps Reserve in 1921, and accepted a commissioned to the Marine Corps in 1922. He was promoted to First Lieutenant in 1926. In 1939 he was again promoted to Captain as Assistant Chief of staff, 1st Marine Division, in New River, North Carolina. He was again promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. In 1942. He began his World War II service participating in the planning and combat phases of the Guadalcanal campaign. He was promoted to colonel in at the end of 1943, and later saw further service in the Pacific Theater. In 1948, he became chief of staff of the Marine Corps Schools, Quantico, Virginia, and in 1950 was named director of the Marine Corps Educational Center. While stationed at Quantico in September 1949, he was promoted to brigadier general. On first of January, 1956, he was promoted to the rank of general and took the oath of office as Commandant of the Marine Corps. After four years as Commandant, he retired with the rank of General on 31 December 1959.
