Betty Elaine Converse passed away peacefully at home in Houston, Texas, on the 18th of July 2011, at the age of 90 years.
Betty was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on the 23rd of February 1921, to Lonnie Peter Dutcher and Evelyn Orrill Woodward Dutcher. The Dutchers moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where Betty grew up and in 1942 graduated from the University of Kansas City, earning a B.A. in music and meeting her future husband, George A. Converse, Jr.
Betty and George were married on the 18th of May 1943, after his return from his tour of duty in England with the Army-Air Force. They traveled to Texas following her parents and landed in Houston.
Betty was the consummate housewife: providing a lovely, warm and peaceful place for her family. She was a wonderful cook, enjoyed sewing and "hooking" with her friends and socializing with the "Silly Sisters." There were canasta games with the family and bridge games with friends.
Betty was a member of the College Women's Club of Houston and served a term as an officer of the Club. It was, however, Bethany Christian Church that captured Betty's greatest attention. She constantly volunteered her help for the activities of the Prisca and Aquilla Class events, was a long-time member of the choir and a member and served a term as Treasurer of the Christian Women's Fellowship as well as church elder.
Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George A. Converse, Jr. and her parents, Lonnie Peter and Evelyn Dutcher. Betty is survived by her son, Robert Gerald "Jerry" Converse and his wife, Sandra W. Converse, of Austin, Texas; her daughter, Judith C. Logan-Brown and her husband, Paul David Brown, of Alvin, Texas; her grandchildren, Victoria Converse Brunker and her husband, Eric Brunker, of Austin, Texas, Abigail Converse of Lexington, Kentucky, Jennifer Logan Benton and her husband, Matthew Benton, of Arlington, Texas, Andrew Logan of Houston, Texas, and Stephanie Logan, of Austin, Texas; her grandchildren, Delaney Brunker and Ryan Brunker of Austin, Texas; Zachariah Benton and Nathanial Benton, of Arlington, Texas; her brother, Jack Leon Dutcher, of Dayton, Ohio; her nephew, Douglas Warren Dutcher, of Dayton, Ohio; her nieces, Patty Dutcher Noriekas, of Dayton, Ohio, and Jeanne Dutcher Smith, of Edmond, Oklahoma; and great nephews, Marc Noriekas, Ryan Noriekas, Christopher Smith and Alexander Smith.
Betty was lovingly attended by Joy Robertson and Cassandra Burns, who together provided Betty 24/7 comfort and support. To these two incredible ladies, the family extends their utmost gratitude and praise.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock in the afternoon until seven o'clock in the evening on Thursday, the 21st of July, in the Parlor of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The memorial service is to be conducted at half-past three o'clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 22nd of July, at Bethany Christian Church, 3223 Westheimer Road in Houston, where the Rev. Brad Stagg is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception is to be held in the adjacent Hall of Friendship.
Prior to the service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions in Mrs. Converse's name may be made to Bethany Christian Church, 3223 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX, 77098.
