FIRST CHEESE FACTORY
IN OTSEGO COUNTY

That the first cheese factory was
founded in Otsego county in the year
1858 and that this was probably the
third to be established in the state
is the deduction of the Fireman's
Journal from information furnished
by A. W. Brown of Plainfield. The
cheese factory which in Mr. Brown's
memory was the first to be opened
in the county was established by his
father, William L. Brown, in the
town of Plainfield in the year mentioned
above and he is of the opinion
that at that time there were only two
others, one located at North Bridge-
water and one at Rome, both in Oneida
county. A home dairy had been
operated upon the Brown farm for
Several years preceding the opening
of the cheese factory. The present
owner commenced making cheese in
his father's factory when a lad of 14
years. The Plainfield factory continued
until 1890.
