Elizabeth Pence Smith, 59,a former personal assistant to John W. Snyder, Secretary of the Treasury, during the Truman Administration, died at her home Monday after a short illness.
Mrs. Smith was Mr. Snyder's personal private assistant from 1945 to 1951 during which time she served on the White House staff and at the Treasury. Mr. Snyder served as chairman of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, Director of the Office of War Mobilization and Secretary of the Treasury. In her capacity with the diplomatic corp, Ms. Pence traveled a great deal with Mr. Snyder, Mrs. Snyder and the delegations in England, France, Switzerland among others. She spoke most often of meeting Winston Churchill at Checquers and her many visits with the Trumans especially movie night.
Mrs. Smith was born in Chicago, Illinois, attended Rockford College, was Curator and then Assistant Director of the Chicago Historical Society and temporary Director prior to coming to Washington DC. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution having joined in 1924 and Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Alexandria, Virginia.
She married Chester H. Smith, Staff Director and General Counsel of the US Senate Small Business Committee, in 1948.
Mrs. Smith was survived by her husband, two daughters and a sister living in Evanston, Illinois.
Services will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church followed by interment in Chicago. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Aldersgate Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
