Delpha was the fifth of nine children for parents William Ace Turnidge and Alfretta Irwin. She married Glenn Winfield Leach in 1924 in Tillamook County, Oregon. The marriage ended prior to 1929.

Delpha was living and working in San Francisco, California by 1930. She was employed as a manicurist in a barber shop. Future husband Stephen Benedict was a hairdresser in a beauty shop in San Francisco in 1930. It can be surmised that this is how they met, possibly employed in the same shop. Delpha married Stephen Louis Benedict in San Francisco in 1931. They had one child, daughter Arlene.
