Father David Joseph Rieder was born on August 28, 1930, in St. Cloud, MN. He was the son of Walter and Leonilla (Bernick) Rieder. He attended Holy Angels Grade School, St. Cloud, MN and St. John's Preparatory School, Collegeville, MN. He received his seminary training at St. John's Seminary, Collegeville, MN and Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. Father Rieder was ordained to the priesthood on June 2 1956, at St. Mary's Cathedral, St. Cloud, MN by The Most Reverend Peter W. Bartholome. He celebrated his First Mass on June 3, 1956, at St. Paul's Catholic Church, St. Cloud, MN.
Father Rieder served in the following pastoral assignments: associate pastor, St. Mary's Cathedral, St. Cloud, June 1956 - June 1959; pastor St. Patrick's Church, Minden, June 1968 - July 1990; St. Henry's Church, Perham, July 1990 - June 2005; St. Stanislaus Church, Perham July 1994 - June 2005. In addition for St. Henry's Church and St. Stanislaus Church, he was appointed pastor/moderator in solidum of Holy Cross Church. Butler, Sacred Heart Church, Dent and St. Lawrence Church, Rush Lake, July 2002 - June 2005.

Father Rieder served at Cathedral High School, St. Cloud, as instructor and assistant superintendent from June 1959 until June 1967; principal and associate superintendent of schools 1967 until June 1968. He was appointed Superintendent of Education for the Diocese March 1968 - July 1990. In addition to his other assignments Father Rieder served as Diocesan Consultor, 1995-2000 and he was the Dean of the Wadena Deanery 1993 - 2000.

Father Rieder died on June 17, 2005 in Merit Care Hospital, Fargo, North Dakota. A visitation will be from 3-9 pm on Wednesday and after 9 am on Thursday at St. Henry's Catholic Church in Perham. A Vigil Service will be held on Wednesday, June 22, 2005 at 7:30 pm at the church in Perham, MN. A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, June 23, 2005, 11 am at St. Henry's Catholic Church, Perham, MN

A visitation will be from 5-9 pm on Thursday and after 8:30 am on Friday at St. Mary's Cathedral in St. Cloud A Vigil Service will be held at St. Mary's Cathedral, St. Cloud, MN on Thursday June 23, at 7:00 pm

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 24, 2005 at 11:00 am St. Mary's Cathedral, St. Cloud, MN with The Most Reverend John F. Kinney presiding, Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery, St. Cloud, MN.

Father Rieder is survived by his sisters, Joan Bleser, San Antonio, Texas, Renee Schroer, Alexandria, Virginia, and Kathryn Loehr, Maple Grove, MN and brother, Daniel Rieder, St. Paul, MN,

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Ann Solfelt.
