Peter M. Weigel, 96, Hays, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, at St. John's of Hays Care Center. He was born Jan. 30, 1912, in Emmeram to Michael and Agnes (Kuhn) Weigel.

He attended automotive mechanics school in Texas and ordinance parts school in Toledo, Ohio, while in the Army.

He married Lucille Giebler on Oct. 9, 1946, in Catherine. She preceded him in death Jan. 30, 2000.

He worked in the oil fields and for R.C. Williams, Hays. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II and was a staff sergeant with the 57th Ordinance Base. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and a charter member of the World War II National Memorial.

Survivors include a son, Virgil, and wife, Jeanette, Topeka; a brother, Alvin Weigel, Victoria; three grandchildren, Emily Potter, Elizabeth Jones and Nolan Weigel; and four great-grandchildren, Waker Jones, Holden Jones, Nicholas Potter and Preston Potter.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Frank, Joe, Jerome and Ed Weigel; and five sisters, Rose Weigel, Regina Weigel, Lidwina Klobertenz, Basilia Frank and Irene Meis.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays; burial with military honors in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, both at Hays Memorial Chapel, 20th and Vine. A vigil will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
