Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War in the 2nd Illinois Volunteer Artillery, rising to the rank of Colonel. He then served as Chief of Staff to Maj. General John A. McClernand before serving as Acting Assistant Inspector General for the Department of the Susquehanna. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US volunteers on September 28, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services". He had served as Illinois' state Adjutant General previous to the war (1858 to 1861).
