Catherine Elizabeth Sutherland, called "Katie" by the family, was the sixth child and second daughter of John Sutherland and Ellen Catherine Nicholson. When she was a small child, she fell from a barn and was badly injured. As a result of the injury, her growth was hampered and she remained small and under-developed. She was frequently ill. Katie died of meningitis at the age of 15, in the winter of 1887.
