The death of Mrs. David Branstad, 61, last Thursday afternoon came as a shock to residents of this community and Winnebago county where so many people knew and loved her for her kindly interest for everyone and her happy cheerful philosophy. Death was caused by an internal hemorrhage.
Mrs. Branstad became suddenly ill while attending a meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary, Wednesday evening of last week, She was taken to her home and suffered considerably through the night. A doctor from Forest City was called when her condition did not improve. She was taken by ambulance to the municipal hospital in Forest City where she died at 5:19 that afternoon. Although her sudden passing came as a distinct shock, members of the family had known for some time that when death came it would be in this manner.
Funeral services were held Mon day afternoon at 2:30 from Our Saviors Lutheran church in Leland with the Rev: T. H. Quanbeck officiating. A large number of relatives and friends gathered to pay a final tribute, with many of them being unable to crowd into the church proper or basement.
Mrs. James Halverson and Mrs. A. J. Erickson sang, "Resting In His Love" Mrs. Erickson also sang a solo in Norwegian, "Lov og Tak og evig Aere." Mrs. Marlin Nolte was organist. Pallbearers were: Martin and Alfred Elvebak, Sam and Lewis Cleven, Bert Johnson and Donald Holle. Interment was in the Forest Home cemetery, east of Leland. All the children were home for the sad rites. Other relatives from a distance attending included Mrs. Donald Holle, Owatonna, Minn., Mrs. Iver Grunlund, Fargo, N. Dak., Miss Ruth Branstad, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Cottrell, Omaha, Nebr.
Anna Sophia Johnson was born October 20, 1890 on a farm near Scarville, Iowa, to Sigvor and Daniel Johnson. She was baptized and confirmed in Lime Creek Lutheran church, near Emmons, Minn. She passed away at the municipal hospital in Forest City on Thursday, February 21, 1952.
She was married to Davld Branstad of Leland, Iowa. They lived in Lignite, N. Dak., a number of years and then moved to Winnebago county, Iowa. Their present home was at Thompson.
She is survived by her husband and four cllildren: Sigvor Donna, (Mrs. Arthur Floyd) of Boulder, Colo.; Engel of Cedar Falls; Della, (Mrs. Thomas Carmody) of Falls Church, Virginia; and Dorothy, a student at Cedar Falls; also two brothers, Selmer of Plentywood, Mont., and Gilbert of Lake Park, Minn., one sister, Mrs. Andrew Holle of Owatonna, Minn., and six grandchildren. She was a kind and loving mother and generously gave of her time and strength to comfort and help those in sorrow and need.
Of the community activities Mrs. Branstad showed interest in, she was especially active in the American Legion Auxiliary and had served as rehabilitation chairman for some time. She was a member of the ladies aid of the Leland church. She had lived in this county all her life, with the exception of the two years in North Dakota.
