Governor, Congressman. Started the practice of law in Missouri in 1851 where he was a member of the state legislature and attorney general. Returning to his native Kentucky, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat for six terms starting in 1867. From 1883-1887 was governor of Kentucky.
