Clara Ellen Bird 1938-2010

Clara Ellen Younkin Bird passed away on March 12, 2010. She was born on July 4, 1938 in the Pomona Valley Community Hospital.

Clara grew up in the close-knit Younkin and Latham families in Chino, California. She had numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins by the dozen.

She attended school in Chino, where she played the bass drum in the marching band. Clara attended Chaffey College, and married her high school sweetheart Owen Louis Bird.

Clara worked for the Ventura County Public Works Agency in accounts payable for the past 17 years. She had various jobs as her family grew that included her employment with Mattel Toy Company and as a department store clerk.

Clara and Owen raised four children. She enjoyed her work as a dispatcher for the California Highway Patrol, Arizona Department of Public Safety and Oxnard 911 Emergency Call Center.

She was involved in community activities with her family. Among these were Job’s Daughters, United Methodist Youth Fellowship (leader and participant), Cub Scouts, and AAU Swim Team.

She was an avid reader, and enjoyed the advances of technology. She loved her family’s yearly gatherings at the beach house. She played computer games and puzzles. She was very active in the United Methodist Church by creating programs, costumes and handicrafts. She is known for her bird collections and her Dodger blue blood.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 19 at the First United Methodist Church in Santa Paula.
