Mr. F. G. THARPE DEAD
Mr. Franklin G(age) Tharpe died at his home at Harmony, Iredell county, last Friday night about 10 o’clock. The interment was Sunday, after funeral service by Rev. Wilson of Statesville.
Mr. Tharpe was a good citizen - he had lived a useful life and now goes to receive the reward that awaits the faithful. He was 72 years, 1 month and 5 days old, his seventy second anniversary having been celebrated on June 18th, his children and grand-children joining with him in this event; an account of which was published in the Times a few weeks ago.
Mr. Tharpe was three times married; his last wife survives him. He has ten living children; eight by the first wife and two by the second wife. One son by the second wife died two or three years ago. There are no children by the last marriage J. Henry Tharpe or Elkin is his eldest son, and mrs. S. A. Foster also of Elkin is a daughter; boh being of the first set of children. All the children are married and have families except two daughters by the second marriage. (Nanie and Mamie.)
He has one living brother, Mr. Edwin Tharpe and one living sister, Mrs. Louise Green. Mr. W. W. Tharpe, who is a nephew of Mr. Tharpe, and Mr. J. Henry Tharpe attended the funeral. It was not convenient for Mrs Foster to attend, but with the exception of Mrs. Foster all the children were present.
As we have already stated Mr. Tharpe was a good man. His heart beat in response to every call looking to the betterment of his country, he was progressive and took an active and leading part in every good work. The Highschool at Harmony, which has done so much for the village of Harmony, and that section of the county, found in him a warm friend - one who gave his time, money and influence to its success.
He had a long been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and he had always been active in behalf of the church and the work for which it stood
The large crowd that attended the funeral service - his friends from four counties attested the high esteem in which he was held.
The editor of the Times had known him for more than thirty years and it affords him pleasure to testify that Mr. Tharpe’s worth as a citizen and as a christian gentleman.
