JOHN A. CHILDS III, of RED BANK, died at Riverview Medical Center. He was baptized at Emanuel Baptist Church of Tinton Falls. Upon graduating Red Bank High School in 1960, he enrolled at the American Academy-McAllister Institute of Funeral Service. The Childs Funeral Home opened in 1967. He was active in Prince Hall free masonry; he was a member of Bates Lodge 220 I.B.P.O.E. of W. and the Celestial Masonic Lodge, both of Red Bank. He was a lifetime member of the NAACP, Red Bank Chapter. In 1970, he became a member of the Red Bank Men's Club Inc. He was a past member of the Red Bank Board of Education. He also served as a member of several organizations, including the Garden State Funeral Directors Association, New Jersey State Funeral Directors Association, the National Funeral Directors Association, Monmouth County Urban League, Red Bank Rotary, Touchdown Club of Monmouth County; and the Community Advisory Committee at Riverview Medical Center, Meridian Health System. He attended the Metropolitan Baptist Church of Newark.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Anderson Ford.; a daughter, Heather Denise; a brother, Albert Childs; two sisters, Gail Childs Evans and Joanne Childs Clayborne; and a host of other relatives, church family, lodge brothers, cherished friends, business associates, and staff.
