Given up at birth to the Children's Home Society of Washington. Adopted not long after by James & Florence (Thurber) Hersom and raised in Yakima, WA until the age of about 17 when he left school and joined the United States Army. Spent the next nearly 31 years in the service.

Early postings were the Presidio of San Francisco where he worked as an orderly at Letterman General Hospital. Was sent to Corregidor Island, in the Phillipines, circa 1936. He served with the 60th Coastal Artillery on "The Rock" until early November of 1941. At that time he was shipped home due to unknown health problems. He just missed the hell that took place following the Japanese invasion of the PI. He lost many friends in the weeks and months that followed December 7th, 1941.
