Richard McGlinn was a Major during WWII as part of the 395th Bomb Squadron, 40th Bomb Group, 58th Bomb Wing, XX Bomber Command.
McGlinn piloted B-29 serial 42-93829 ("Cait Paomat"), which was Gaelic for St. Catherine.
On August 20th 1944, while attempting to return from a mission to Yawata, Japan, McGlinn and his B-29 crew were forced to bail out over Siberia. They bailed out in the dead of night, into a part of Siberia that was totally uninhabited. His crew was split into several groups, and survived by eating bugs, worms, frogs and whatever else they could find.
Eventually they were all "rescued", only to be kept by the Russians for an extended period of time with over 100+ other US airmen. This treatment was very hard on McGlinn, which makes me wonder if this contributed to his seemingly early death at the age of 58.
