Sharon Lavon Detering

Sharon Lavon Detering of Harrisburg, died on July 25, 2011 of unknown causes. She was born on August 25, 1933, in Rose Lodge, Oregon to Gerald and Katherine Sittser. She graduated from Harrisburg High School in 1952. She attended Willamette University in Salem, OR and studied social sciences. She worked in the Lane County office for Social Services for several years. Sharon married her high school sweetheart, Roger L. Detering on August 11, 1956. They were King and Queen of the High School Carnival in their early years as a couple, and most recently the Grand Marshalls of the Harrisburg July 4th celebration. They spent 55 great years together. Being number 12 of 13 kids, she always enjoyed hosting large family gatherings for holidays and special occasions. She was the glue that kept the extended family together. Sharon worked tirelessly with Roger to operate the Detering Orchards family business. She was the backbone of the operation running countless errands and cooking large farm meals everyday. She created a wonderful family atmosphere on the farm for those of all ages to enjoy. She loved making fresh fruit pies and cobblers and served them to all those who visited Detering Orchards in the fall harvest season. She had a loving infectious smile and the gift of generosity with everyone she met. She was the matriarch of the Detering family. Sharon was a wonderful wife, and a mother who was enthusiastically devoted and adoring of her children and grandchildren. Her life revolved unselfishly around the needs of her family and all of their activities, rarely stopping to take time for herself. She found education to be one of the most important gifts she could give her children and always encouraged them to learn and grow throughout their lives. She loved her flower gardens and her daily walk through the pear orchard next to their house talking to her Creator and enjoying His creation. Sharon is survived by her husband Roger Detering, her children Greig Detering, Diane Detering-Paddison & son-in-law Chris Paddison, Becky Detering & son-in-law Kyle Bliffert, and Mark Detering; and her eight grandchildren Andrew, Ken, and Jack Detering, Tayler Detering-Blackman, Christian and Annie Tucker, Rose and Gus Paddison,. She is also survived by her sister, Bernice Buchanan, and her brother Jim Sittser, and by many dear friends in and around the Harrisburg, OR area. Remembrances can be sent to the Mexico Mission at the Harrisburg Christian Church. A Celebration of her Life will be held in Harrisburg at the Harrisburg Christian Church on Saturday, July 30, 2011 at 2:00pm.
