Richard G. Bayhurst, 73, of San Jose, Calif., formerly of Oil City, died Saturday, July 23, 2011, at his residence after a long battle with lymphoma. He was born Oct. 30, 1937, in Oil City, and he was the son of the late Joseph and Edna Hargenrater Bayhurst Sr. The family formerly lived on East Sixth Street in Oil City.

Richard graduated in 1955 from St. Joseph High School. He then entered military service and was honorably discharged as an SP4 in the US Army on Dec. 31, 1963. After being discharged from the Army he attended Gannon University in Erie where he received a bachelor's degree in business administration. While living in Erie he was employed at Hamilton Lumber Co.

He later moved to San Jose, where he was employed by Angels Hardware and Winchester Hardware in Campbell, Calif. for 30 years. He retired from Economy Lumber in Campbell in 2005.
He was of the Catholic faith and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. His favorite hobbies were square and round dancing, which he was involved in for more than 30 years.

Mr. Bayhurst is survived by his lovely wife, the former Grace Chang; two stepdaughters and their spouses, Pam and Michael Ma of Dallas, Texas and Lynn and Joseph Barello of Naperville, Ill; and his grandchildren, Eric and Alex Ma and Carly and Cassidy Barello.

In addition to his immediate family, he is also survived by a brother in-law, Dave Gillespie, and a sister in-law, Marie Bayhurst, both of Erie; two aunts; and many loving nieces and nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Marjorie and Connie Bayhurst and Nancy Gillespie; and a brother, Joseph Bayhurst Jr.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Reinsel Funeral Home & Crematory in Oil City. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Stephen Church in Oil City with Father Matthew Ruyechan presiding. Mr. Bayhurst will be laid to rest with his parents and two of his sisters at Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
