John Gordon Byers, Sr., 87, of Kilmarnock, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001. Mr. Byers was born in Lonacoming, Maryland on Augst 10, 1913. He graduated from th University of Maryland in 1936 and began a 35 year career in government service. He retired in 1971 from the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C., and moved to Kilmarnock where he resided until his death. He was married to Mary Dow Byers, who died in 1983. He subsequently married Virginia Davis Byers of Kilmarnock. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Davis, a son, John G. Byers, Jr. of Bristol, TN.; a daughter Barbara Van Tine of McLean; three step-daughters, Ann Davis Gill, Sherry Davis Ketner and Elizabeth Davis McBride; 11 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Funeral services were July 21, in Kilmarnock United Methodist Church with interment in Christ Church Burying Ground. The Rev. Edward S. Barnett officiated. Pallbearers were Robert S. Deihl, Steve Pittman, Scott Gill, Robert etner, James A. Ketner Sr., and James A. Ketner, Jr.
