1914-1916: Daisy was a teacher.

Excerpt from obituary of her daughter:
"Lorayne Coombs was born to Hubert O. and Daisy Butka Swartout, Seventh-day Adventist missionaries in Shanghai, China. Her father, who had been teaching at Mount Vernon College, now academy, in Ohio, had gone to the mission field with her mother in August 1916.
When the family returned, he became a physician and a member of the staff at the College of Medical Evangelists, now Loma Linda University, in California. He authored The Modern Medical Counselor, a popular book published by the Pacific Press in the early 1940s, and served as chief public health officer of San Luis Obispo and Los Angeles counties."

Abt 1915: Letha Butka told Brenda Jo Butka this story: "She [Letha] told me a story about when she was an eighth-grader (I think) and was chosen to lead in the high school graduates at graduation, which was an immense honor. She was thrilled, but crushed when James Butka, her father, forbade her to have the white shoes which were required for the ceremony. He thought white shoes were frivolous and evil. Aunt Daisy, her older sister, basically said he was not going to ruin Letha's big event, and bought the shoes anyway. They dyed them brown afterward."

Aug 1916-1926: Aug 1916: Hubert Oscar Swartout took his family to Shanghai, China, where he was a modern medical counselor and missionary. (Dau. Obit.).

Aug. 1916: Went to Shanghai, China to be SDA Missionary, along with her family. (Daughter's obituary).

She took in a reared a few children who weren't her own.

She was a medical writer and Seventh-Day Adventist missionary.

Sam Coombs provides: "Daisy pushed all of her brothers through medical school, some unwillingly."

L. Aileen Butka provides:
"I remember that Daisy was doing an insurance business from home.
The eldest, Hersel's sister Daisy, married a bright, good-looking young minister, Hubert Swartout, and they soon left for China as missionaries for a seven-year term.
Hubert saw the tremendous medical needs, and when they returned to the States he took medicine at Loma Linda. He was extremely brilliant, making top grades in every area. When he finished, he was asked to be the Chief Medical Officer of Los Angeles County, a prestigious position he held for the next 35 years.
Another significant accomplishment of Dr. Swartout was the writing of a health book for lay people. It was quite a big book, titled "Modern Medical Counselor". This book became very popular, and was THE health book (for around $25.00) colporteurs sold for nearly 30 years. Years later two well known medical school professors put together an updated sequel, but their efforts produced three big beautiful color-illustrated volumes costing around $350.00. As of 2005, the set is still being updated and sold, but never reached the circulation and popularity that "Modern Medical Counselor" enjoyed. Translated into 26 languages.
Hubert and Daisy both lived into their nineties.
Their son, Hubert Charles Swartout, Jr. (Lowen) became a physician, and practiced most of his life near Hinsdale Adventist Hospital in Illinois. [Daughter Kathleen said moved every couple years, until Elmhurst, Illinois after leaving the SDA church 1958 until he retired. Was in Arizona as a doctor on an indian reservation.]
Their daughter, Lorayne, became a professional musician, and was music director (choir) of the White Memorial Church for many years. She married a physician, Sam Coombs, and they had seven children."

"At the turn of the 20th Century, leaders of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Illinois Conference had the foresight and determination to establish schools to train young people to attain exceptional levels of knowledge and a relationship with God.
With this vision 78 acres of rural farmland was purchased in 1909 from Mr. Skogland to start the Broadview Swedish Seminary in Broadview, Illinois -- almost a days journey by horse and buggy from growing Chicago.

In 1922 the name was changed to Broadview College and Theological Seminary and continued as such until 1934 when the college joined with Emmanuel Missionary College (now Andrews University)."
