Mrs. Claire White Dies; Was Professional Singer
Mrs. Claire H. White of Fayetteville, who sang professionally in opera and concerts under her maiden name of Claire Alcee, died Thursday at Community-General Hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Fairchild and Meech DeWitt Chapel. There will be no calling hours.
Her late husband, Andrew Strong White, a prominent Syracuse attorney, was the nephew of Andrew D. White, a diplomat and a founder and first president of Cornell University.
As Claire Alcee, lyric soprano, she made her operatic debut as Desdemona in "Otello" with the Philadelphia Grand Opera. She gave recitals in New York City, Philadelphia, Berlin and Paris.
She once sang for President and Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt in the East Room of the White House.
Critics commented on the pure quality of her lyric soprano, good range, dramatic talent and the "radiant charm" of her personality.
The Whites were world travelers. They lived for several months of the year at their apartment in The Plaza Hotel in New York City, when not at their Fayetteville home, Fairfield, on East Genesee Street.
Mrs. White was a patron of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and was a frequent first-nighter in her front-row seat at the Met. In September she traveled to Paris to study and attend the Paris Opera.
Mrs. White was born in Washington, D.C.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. D. Austin Howard of Bartlesville, Oka.
