Barbary was the daughter of Captain Elijah Johnson and Ruth Casey of East Greenwich, RI. She married Job Lawton on May 15, 1783 by a Baptist pastor. He was the son of Rebecca Mott and Isaac Lawton, who had been Quakers in East Greenwich.
Isaac Lawton, Job Lawton (Barbary's husband), and her sons were cordwainers (shoe-makers) and curriers.
By 1800 Job Lawton had bought a farm in Pawtuxet, Warwick, Rhode Island. He died during 1805. Job and Barbary had five surviving children: Isaac, Peleg, Ruth, Job and George D. Isaac lived in East Greenwich. Peleg went and settled in NY state. Job and George Dorrance Lawton came to settle in Griswold during the 18-teens. Barbary remained living with her daughter Ruth in Pawtuxet, until Ruth married Daniel Fenner in 1821 and they lived in Providence.
By 1826, Barbary and Job and George sold the father Job's property in Pawtuxet, while Job and George bought farms in Griswold in the vicinity of Bitgood Road today, which back during the early 1800s became known as "Lawton Village." It was probably about at that time that Barbary came to Griswold, Connecticut to live with her sons, and it is here that she died.
Barbary's gravestone reads Barbary Lawton, relict of Job Lawton. Right next to her is buried her little grand-daughter Mariah Lawton, who was a child of George and his wife, Mariah. Barbary and little Mariah are buried near Barbary's son Job and his family. George left Griswold by 1840 and returned to Rhode Island and lived in Providence with most of his family. Job and his family remained in Griswold.
