Martha made the BEST apple-strudel dessert! Her well deserved accolades were given each year at the St. James "Scoop Dinner" events, which raised funds for the little church in Durham.

Chico Enterprise-Record, Saturday, March 29, 1980, pg 2A: Martha Jugum – A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Brusie Funeral Home for Martha Pearl Jugum, 73, of Durham, who died Thursday. A requiem mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. James Catholic Church in Durham.

Born Oct. 10, 1906, in Desne, Yugoslavia, to Peter and Helen Grgich, she came to the United States at the age of 20 and settled in Durham. The Jugums were one of about 20 families from Yugoslavia settling in Durham, with many operating their own orchards. Since moving to Durham, she lived in the same home where her seven children were reared, and for many years she and her family operated a 90-acre almond ranch. Her husband, Louis, died in 1946.

She was active in the Durham community where she was a member of the St. James Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of America, the Altar Society, the Durham Women's Club, the Farm Bureau Federation, the Durham Grange, the Almond Growers Association, the Senior Citizens and the Croation Fraternal Union.

Survivors include three children, Victor of Durham, Joe of Chico and Helen Denton of Corte Madera; one brother, Peter Grgich of Yugoslavia; and two grandchildren, Debbie Jugum of Durham and David Denton of Corte Madera.

Pallbearers will be Jim Herceg, John Parkel, Dick Gavranich, Dan Grzanich, Larry Merlo and Norm McDonald. Burial will be at Chico Cemetery.
