Son of William Anderson Pickett, Son of Robert Anderson Pickett
After leaving High School William became a shoe sales man then a store manager at American Hardware in Jackson MS. Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor (13 Jan 1942) William enlisted in the Navy and was sworn in by Lt. W. Coffee, JAG (Later Adm. of JAG and Chief Justice). After training he was stationed in the European theater. He served on early aircraft carriers that developed night bombing. After a brief hospitalization he was assigned to the Pacific fleet. He served on the USS Strickland and USS Goss, seeing action on the Philippine Islands (Battle of Lingayon Gulf) and the liberation, Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, Okinawa and the Japanese Homeland. He was part of the occupation of Tokyo and was present at the "Victory - Japan Day" (V-J Sept 2 1945). William was honorably discharged at Camp Wallace, TX. He joined the Naval Reserve and was stationed on the Great Lakes (Buffalo - Rochester, NY). On 23 August 1950 he was re-activated to active duty on the USS Donner in Korea. He was injured in January 1952, in a boiler room explosion. After several surgeries he was released honorably on 28 Jan 1952. He was part of "the crossing" ceremony on 8 Dec 1944 and 12 Oct 1950.
He died of a stroke, in his room after a long illness.
