Man Who Was Held in High Esteem--Brief Biographical Sketch--Surviving Relatives.

M.W. Maxwell died at 8:03 o'clock Friday morning at the home of his son-in-law, James Negley, two miles north of Norris. Death was caused by cancer of the stomach. Mr. Maxwell had been ailing for more than a year. In the fall he gradually became worse and early in November he went to Battle Creek, Mich., for treatment in a sanitarium. Finding himself little benefited, he returned home about a month ago, and from that time he failed to rally.

Martin Walter Maxwell was born in Buckheart township, Feb. 22, 1844. He was a son of Alexander and Mary Maxwell, both of whom are dead. When about 15 years of age Mr. Maxwell went to live in Farmington township, where he remained several years. In January, 1869, he married Miss Elizabeth Rock, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Rock, and following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell lived on a farm about four miles east of Canton. Later Mr. Maxwell purchased the farm near Norris where his death occurred, and there the family resided until 1893, when they moved to Canton.

Mr. Maxwell is survived by his wife and three daughters -- Mrs. James Negley, Mrs. Henry Roller and Miss Susie Maxwell. Four brothers and one sister are living. They are James Maxwell, whose home is in California; William Maxwell, who lives in Kansas; Richard Maxwell, who resides near Norris; Howard Maxwell, whose home is six miles south of Canton, and Mrs. John Fisher, of this city. Five brothers are dead.

Mr. Maxwell was a well-known resident of Canton, a prominent member of the Masonic and Elks lodges, and was highly esteemed by all with whom he was associated.

The funeral will be held at the Negley home, near Norris at 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon, and interment will be in Greenwood cemetery.
