My mom and I were always dog people. Until one of the neighbors cats had kittens. We fell in love with two of them. One was black and white and the other was yellow and white. The little yellow and white one ended up dying the first week.

My aunt didn't want us to get a cat. She believed the superstition that cats would suck the life out of you when you were asleep. My aunt was weird.

My mom named the black and white kitten, Babylove. Babylove fit right into the household. She really was more my mom's cat than anyone else's. She did have one habit of curling up at the top of my head and sleeping with me at night.

I went off to college the fall of 1977. I came back home one weekend and my mom and aunt had bought some new living room furniture. But one thing was missing. Babylove. Mom told me that my aunt had demanded that the cat go so she wouldn't damage the new furniture with her claws. Funny thing is she never worried about her dogs peeing on the carpet of the damage they did.

Mom gave Babylove to a woman she knew who's husband had recently died. The woman took good care of Babylove but the hole was still there with us where she had been.

I've never had another cat. Interestingly enough once I got to be in my mid-twenties I developed allergies to them but I've never forgotten Babylove and how soft she was, how she moved silently through the house, and most of all her curling up by my head at night.
