A native of Elgin, Ill., he formerly operated his own drug store in Hillside, but in recent years had worked as a relief pharmacist at the Janelli Pharmacy, Summit and Hathaway Pharmacy, Cranford. He was a communicant of St. Theresa's Church.
He lived in Newark and Elizabeth before moving her five years ago. He was a graduate of Rutgers College of Pharmacy, Newark.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Katherine Shuster Matalene; a daughter, Mrs. James A. Dirlam of Kenilworth; and a sister, Mrs. Charles Lauter, of Miami, Florida.
A solemn high mass of requiem will be celebrated at 10 a.m. tomorrow of St. Theresa's Church. The funeral will be at 9:20 a.m. at the Daniel J. Leonard and Sons Home for Funerals, Elizabeth. Interment will be in St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia.
