John A. Masten was the eldest of nine known children of William Masten (1796-1860) and his first wife, Lucy Richards (1797-1848), who married c1819 in presumably North Carolina. After Lucy died, William remarried to Parthenia Teague (c1803-1886) on 03 Jul 1856 at Forsyth County, North Carolina, but had no additional children.
John married Lucy Ann Peddycord (1821-1876) on 02 Apr 1845 at Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina. John and Lucy were the parents of six known children, namely:
1. Charles William Masten (1846-1908)
2. Joseph W. Masten (1848-1927)
3. Lucy Elisabeth Masten Faw (1850-1882)
4. Mary Jane Masten Weir (1852-1935)
5. Ella C. Masten Ogburn Holland (1859-1936)
6. Susan Masten (1862-a1885)
