Papers found after his death indicated that he served in Co. I, 7th Infantry Regiment during the Philippine Insurrection. He also served in the 30th Infantry, Co. C. His father died less than 6 months after his birth. His mother died when he was 20 and his step-sister, Winnifred, was 16. Frank served for three years during the Philippine Insurrection. He spent at least a year at a Veterans Home in California suffering from "malarial poisoning and chronic dysentery."
