Parley Steve Bateman was born to Parlon D. Bateman and Illa D. Stocking. He was raised and went to school in the Shelley, Bingham County, Idaho area.

Steve married Maxine Louise Mullen on Oct 14, 1940, in Idaho Falls, Bonneville County, Idaho. They lived in the Shelley area, Shoshone, Lincoln County area, and north of New Meadows, Adams County, Idaho, until his death from kidney failure. Steve had a motorcycle accident shortly after he married Maxine resulting in a broken back. Although he was able to recover remarkedly well, it resulted in Steve and Maxine not being able to have children of their own. Because of this and their desire to raise a child, Steve and Maxine adopted Dixie Sharlene Bateman in December 1955 in Boise, Ada County, Idaho, shortly after she was born.

Steve farmed near Shoshone, Lincoln County, Idaho, many years. Around 1960 Steve and Maxine sold their farm and moved to New Meadows, Adams County, Idaho, along with his parents and other members of his family. There the family purchased Zim's Resort north of town. Steve had progressive kidney failure throughout his life and died in McCall, Valley County, Idaho. If kidney transplants had been available in 1962, Steve would have been a prime candidate. He is buried in Shelley, Idaho in Hillcrest Cemetery near his parents and beside his daughter, Dixie Sharlene.
